Smart Water – Property Marking

Gloucestershire Constabulary, in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch, is actively encouraging householders in the North Cotswolds to consider purchasing a revolutionary product called SmartWater to protect their valuables and to deter casual, opportunist thieves.

SmartWater is a unique solution, containing a blend of harmless, colourless, odourless chemicals which provides it with a 'forensic fingerprint'.  This fingerprint has been likened in concept to DNA profiling.  Each batch of SmartWater is totally unique and once applied to a surface it is virtually impossible to remove.

It is easily detected however using an ultra violet lamp. Only the smallest sample of SmartWater has to be recovered and sent to the forensic science laboratory to enable the rightful owner to be identified.

SmartWater is available to buy commercially from the producers but, by taking advantage of this joint Police and Neighbourhood Watch offer, you can make a substantial saving.  Contact your local NW Coordinator or the NW field officer Andy Fogden for more details of this offer.

Once SmartWater has been used to mark property distinctive stickers are put into the windows to discourage further visits from burglars, telling them not to bother here.  Street signs can be erected in streets where a substantial proportion of the houses have SmartWater.

Smartwater suspect closeupWe would prefer not to have to arrest anyone who has stolen or dishonestly handled property marked with SmartWater so now we are telling suspects all about it.

Smartwater suspect

When arrested persons arrive at our Custody Suite they will pass through one of our SmartWater detection areas. These are powerful ultra violet lights which will cause any Smartwater which has transferred onto the persons skin or clothing to be illuminated.

Further information about Smart Water can be obtained from the Smart Water website - www.smartwater.com

Crimestoppers

Crimestoppers is a partnership between the community, business and the media on one hand, and the police on the other, Crimestoppers assists in the detection of crime. It is a conduit enabling people who have information about crime to communicate with the police whilst remaining anonymous.

A single nation-wide freephone number:

0800 555 111

can be called with any information about any crime. No caller is asked for their name and calls are not traced or recorded. Anonymity is important because many people do not want to be seen talking to the police – they don’t want to get involved or to be called as witnesses. Some may be in fear of their own safety or feel threatened by family members, neighbours or fellow workers who may be involved in criminal activities.

Apart from not being asked for their name, callers are also offered cash rewards if their information leads to an arrest or charge. However on average, only 15%-20% of those eligible for a reward actually claim them – most simply want anonymity.

Message in a Bottle Link Available through NCNW

Message in a Bottle is a voluntary scheme for anyone living at home who might be reassured to know that essential information would be readily available to the emergency services, should they suffer an accident or sudden illness.

The scheme ensures that vital information is available not only to identify you, but to advise of relevant illnesses, allergies, medication and contact addresses.

How does the scheme work?

Your details are stored in a clearly labeled plastic container, which is kept in your fridge. Two matching labels, known to the Emergency Services and other care agencies are displayed in your house, one on the outside of your fridge the other on the inside of your front door.

You complete the form inside the container. This lists your medical conditions and present medication. Should the Emergency Services enter your house they will have immediate access to information about your medical condition and can administer the correct treatment without having to consult you or your doctor. This information could be invaluable when you are in need of urgent treatment but can not speak to the emergency services.
